NPANational Pharmacy Association

About The NPA

The National Pharmacy Association is the national body of Britain's community pharmacy owners. It was formed in 1921 to champion the interests of pharmacy owners and to promote, improve and protect an essential service to the public.

During its 80 year history the NPA has discovered that pharmacy never stands still. New problems and opportunities are constantly presented. But throughout, the association has more than fulfilled its pledge of service to its members - responding swiftly and positively to rapidly changing situations and planning for the future.

NPA NHS Service Development

The NHS Service Development Department is the result of re-structuring Professional Development, which was created in 1994 to respond to the challenges of the changing structure and administration in the NHS. Its aims are threefold:

• to secure an expanded role for the community pharmacist in the provision of healthcare
• to work with local pharmacy leaders to secure adequate funding for that role
• and to facilitate the development of services locally.

NPA has a team of three regionally based Service Development Managers to identify and disseminate best practice and support local pharmacists wanting to develop new NHS services. The office-based team supports the Service Development Managers and NPA members by dealing with a whole range of queries and requests for information and advice on the ever-developing role of the community pharmacist. The Department continually produces resources for members to use in the development of new services. These resources include briefing documents for new services in response to changes within the NHS. NHS Service Development also work at national level in all four countries within the UK to lobby the NHS for community pharmacy inclusion in policy development.
