NPCHF Webinar: Resources to support the safer use of medicines in adult social care environments

The North West School of Pharmacy and medicines optimisation team have developed a number of resources to support the safer use of medicines in adult social care. This session will introduce a range of educational and governance resources that can be used to support adult social care teams to support their workforce, in particular the unregistered workforce, with medicines related activities. The resources are applicable across care home and domiciliary care environments

Speakers

Kate O’Loughlin
Kate is a registered pharmacy technician with over 19 years of experience. Her career began in community pharmacy in 2006, where she studied to become a pharmacy technician. In 2015, she joined Halton Clinical Commissioning Group (now Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board) as a Care Home Pharmacy Technician. In 2018 Kate gained a City & Guilds Level 3 certificate Award in Education and Training. In 2022, Kate started to work 2 days per week with Health Education England (now NHS England) as a practice learning facilitator for the wider workforce, where she leads projects to expand the educational resources available for the non-registered medicines workforce across the Northwest.

Stephen Docherty
Stephen is currently the Head of Foundation School for NHS England in the North West of England where he leads the team responsible for the implementation of the initial education and training standards for pharmacists at a regional level. He is also accreditation panel member for the General Pharmaceutical Council and works for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Assessment and Credentialing Team and an external consultant.
Stephen studied pharmacy at the Robert Gordon University before undertaking his pre-registration and rotational training at Salford Royal Hospital. He subsequently worked in a range of teaching, specialist and district general hospitals in both specialist and generalist roles, including renal medicine, acute admissions and as an undergraduate tutor.
Since 2017 Stephen has worked in regional and national roles, leading on developments relating to pre-registration/foundation trainee pharmacists, advanced and consultant pharmacist practice and the wider workforce including multi-professional prescribing and medicines related support for adult social care.
Chair

Sundus Jawad, FRPharmS.
Sundus has over 25 years of experience working in primary care in various roles as a medicines optimisation pharmacist working closely with GP practices, care homes and other providers. Sundus is also a qualified Independent Prescriber with specialist level experience in frailty, polypharmacy and care of older people working mostly with care home patients. She manages a small team of pharmacy professionals responsible for medicine optimisation in social care and care homes for NHS Frimley. Sundus has significant experience of designing and leading several innovative QI projects including a Prime Minister’s Dementia challenge project promoting safer and appropriate use of anti-psychotics in dementia. She led on the ‘Good hydration in care homes’ project which received national recognition winning several awards and was later developed by NHSEI into a national hydration in care homes toolkit.
Sundus is a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and has very recently been elected as Chair of the newly founded National Pharmacy Care Home Faculty. She is also a NICE Medicines and Prescribing Associate promoting the implementation of evidence-based practice and NICE guidelines in both health and social care. Her professional and research interests include medicines optimisation in care homes, frailty, medication review, polypharmacy and medicines safety. She is currently in a NIHR SPCR primary care clinician career progression fellowship year with the University of Oxford.
